Human Foods Cats Can’t Eat: 5 Things You Should Never Give To Your Feline Friend

One thing that you’re going to learn about cats is that no matter what – they are ALWAYS hungry. Even if you just fed your cat, they will still come after your dinner as if they’ve never seen food before. And of course, because you love them it is hard to resist and not to share. While there are many human foods that are safe for both dogs and cats to consume – there are also human foods cats shouldn’t be anywhere near to, because they can be bad for their health or even toxic.

Human Foods Cats Can’t Eat

Canned Tuna

Cats love tuna. And we love giving cats treats. But canned tuna should be left for humans. This is one human food cats will definitely go crazy over, and also something people assume is fine to give to their felines.

A little tuna here and there shouldn’t do any harm. But giving canned tuna to your cat regularly can cause serious problems and there’s a few reasons why.

First of all – the only food that contains all the nutrition that a cat needs is cat food. A good cat food product will contain all the nutritions, all the vitamins and minerals that your feline needs. So you can not replace cat food with canned tuna. The fact that this is actual fish is not enough. Not only that canned tuna doesn’t contain all the nutritions for your cat, but it also contains mercury. human foods cat fish

This is an element dangerous to both humans and cats. If you often give canned tuna to your cat, mercury can start building in their organism and this can be toxic and lethal for your cat.

Be careful and avoid canned tuna.

Garlic And Onion

Now cats can be a little crazy and fall in love with the weirdest of foods. Some of them will take a bite from just about anything.

Keep both garlic and onion away from your cat’s reach.

The consumption of onion and garlic can lead to the red blood cells of your cat being attacked, and this ultimately leads to anemia. They also attack the intestines of your pet. Once the symptoms of poisoning from garlic/onion appear – because of them other complications are most likely to occur. This is definitely not something you want to see your cat going through, so keep garlic and onion far away from your kitten.

Dairy

Often times milk and cheese seem like an innocent thing to give to a cat. And you’ll notice that may of them would enjoy this if you give it to them. But just because they like it – it doesn’t mean that it’s good for them.

If you’re going by the logic that when they were babies they consumed milk too – don’t. Because even as babies kittens should be only fed with their mother’s milk. And if this is not possible you should provide them with special kitten milk formula.

Dairy products in general are bad for cats because their tolerance for lactose isn’t that big at all. Because their enzymes aren’t able to deal with the lactose that comes from dairy products, once they ingest it it becomes hard for them to digest it. human foods cats milk

This can cause problems like sick stomach, vomiting or diarrhea. Plus, dairy products don’t really have any nutritional values important for cats. There is absolutely no reason to consider giving it to your cat or implementing it in their diet at all.

So, check them off the list. You don’t need them in your cat’s diet at all as they are human foods cats have absolutely no benefit from.

Chocolate And Other Sweet Delights

Another human food cats shouldn’t be anywhere near to. There are many cats that go crazy over chocolate and cake. This, of course, doesn’t mean that they know what they’re doing.

Chocolate can be deadly for your cat. Cocoa, which is what chocolate basically is (add milk to it and that is two bad human foods cats should avoid in one product), contains something called theobromine. This is a compound that cats are not able to process.

This means that by giving your cat chocolate you let this compound build up in your cat’s system. Theobromine affects the cat’s cardiovascular system increasing the blood pressure and heart rate. It can inhibit your cat’s nervous system, make them horribly lethargic and in worst cases – kill them.

Bones

Yes. Cats are predators. Yes. Cats can eat the poor birdy whole all together with the bones. But we’re not talking about those kinds of bones. We’re talking about bigger bones.

Often times people think it is safe and okay to give cats bones cause they are little tigers anyway, right? They can devour just about anything.

Nope. If a bone is too big your cat can actually choke on it. Not only that – but bigger bones are hard and they can cause dental fracturing. Once ingested bones are hard to process and they can cause blocks in the intestines.

Avoid bones as they are also one of the human foods cats have no benefit from.

If Your Cat Eats Any Of These Foods..

First of all don’t panic. Always check how much they have ingested. It will happen if you are a cat owner. And it will most likely happen more than you like to think it will. If it is a little bit of chocolate or a little bit of tuna – it is fine and it is no harm done. But feeding your cat these kinds of foods on purpose is killing your cat.

If your cat ate too much of any of the foods on the list – it is definitely time to contact your vet. Some of the symptoms of food poisoning in your cat may not appear right away. React as fast as possible to make sure that your cat gets the help that they need.

Since prevention is the best cure – always keep foods that are dangerous for your cat away from them. Cats don’t exactly know what is good for them and what isn’t. It is up to you as a responsible cat owner to make sure that your cat doesn’t reach dangerous human foods.

If you want to give your cat a treat – give it a treat that is made for cats. Something that has a nutritional value and is safe for them to eat.
