Your #1 Dog Shampoo and Grooming Guide: How to Choose the Best and More

Dog grooming is an extremely important part of ensuring that your dog will have a comfortable life. One such aspect of grooming is bathing.

Dog shampoo is needed for bathing, making it a key component of grooming.

Bathing your dog is very important as it ensures that your dog’s skin and coat are well-maintained while preventing any odour. This helps prevent any skin diseases that may plague dogs that are dirty.

Furthermore, your dog may enjoy bathing, hence providing it with a paw-sitive experience that deepens the bond between both of you.

Why Do Dogs Stink?

What do dogs smell like?

If you have lived with a dog, you must already be familiar with the smell. The smell lingers, whether in our clothes, our cars, or even our blanketsHowever, it doesnt have to be a bad smell if you take care of them right.

Why do dogs stink? Why do they smell the way they are? Well, dogs cant sweat like we do. They dont release their heat by sweating from the skin’s pores.

They do it by panting and by releasingsweatfrom their soft food. Dogs do sweat lightly from the hair follicles they have in their skin. The skin, just like ours, also produces oil to keep them moisturised, which also contributes to a dog’s “body odour”.

Ear glands also produce a light yeasty smell and combine with the rest to produce a scent that we all know. Those scents are normal, and you can keep them nice and acceptable to breathe in by  taking care of their personal hygiene.

If You Own Poodles, Hush Puppies, Bulldogs, or Pugs

If, by any chance, another living organism like bacteria and fungus is living off your dogs body, it can start to smell bad.

Some dogs that have a lot of ear hair, like a Poodle, or dogs with long floppy ears, like a Basset Hound, are more likely to get an ear infection.

However, you should not get complacent as any dog can suffer from them and can end up smelling really, really bad, depending on how severe it is. Don’t worry, you can check out how to clean your dogs ear at home so you can prevent the wax build-up and a resulting ear infection.

What are other problems that can make your dog smell bad? Chances are that they are having a skin infection. Owners of dogs with folded and layered skin, like Bulldogs and Pugs, must put in more effort, but as I said before, this can happen to any dog and we shouldnt take it lightly.

The folds of the skin are damp and dark areas that don’t get any sunlight and make for a good environment for microorganisms to live in. In response to skin irritation, your dogs body might be releasing more oil and making it more smelly.

If you bathe them too frequently because of this condition, the skin might be too dry because of the removal of oil during bath time. The best advice from me is to take your dog to the vet so that it can get the treatment it needs.

How Often Should You Bathe Your Dog?

The general rule of thumb is to only bathe your dog when it needs to. This could mean when your dog starts to develop an odour or when there is an obvious accumulation of mud on its coat. It is important that you carefully monitor your dog’s level of cleanliness.

Dogs that are too dirty will start to smell and may develop skin diseases while too many baths may result in dry skin for your dog, causing further problems. Constant bathing may end up in natural oils in the skin being washed off, thus causing its coat to dry and lose its shine.

How Do You Bathe Your Dog?

Before bathing your dog, certain things need to be considered:

  1.  The type of dog shampoo to use
  2.  The location
  3.  Your dog’s character or mood

For starters, the correct type of dog shampoo needs to be used to ensure that your dog will be clean and healthy.

A dog’s skin is sensitive just like ours, so it is important that the dog shampoo is mild and not too acidic to prevent any permanent damage to your dog’s skin. I will discuss which dog shampoo is recommended further in this article.

Secondly, the location where your dog is bathed is important as well. You can choose to bathe him either indoors or outdoors. This is usually dependent on your dog’s breed or size.

Bathe Your Dog Outdoors If It Likes

Certain owners may prefer bathing their dogs outdoors with a garden hose as their dogs may be the type to enjoy jumping out of tubs. However, always be sure to check the temperature of the water from the hose as it may be either too cold or too hot for your dog.

Other owners may prefer bathtubs as it allows them more control as their dog is unable to run around. Owners with smaller-sized dogs may prefer this method as well.

However, always be sure to take great care as small dogs may risk drowning in a full tub. Also, remember to have antislip mats around the bathroom to prevent you or your pet from slipping.

Lastly, a good owner should know their dog like the back of their hands. Certain dogs enjoy bathing while others may not. Hence, different tactics are required for these two types.

However, dogs can be trained to eventually enjoy bathing through positive reinforcement and by allowing them to get comfortable. I will be elaborating more on how to train your dog, so stay with me!

How Do You Wash Your Dog’s Face?

When bathing your dog, remember to clean their faces and eyes. Your dogs face should be cleaned during bath time because we often have direct contact with them.

We kiss, hug, and give them pats on the head. But, lets be real, a dog puts its face in everything, from the garbage can to its food bowl. A routine clean-up is needed to keep its fluffy face free of clumps, stains, dried mud, and only God knows what else they touch with their nose.

Tips to Wash Your Dog’s Face

  • Start by using a soft and clean cloth or sponge. Dip the cloth or sponge lightly to roomtemperature water (2025 C). Theres no need to use too much water because your dog can become uncomfortable. Do it gently and dont use too much force when cleaning.
  • Dont use paper towels, napkins, or tissue. When you dip them in water, which you need to do, they can easily be destroyed and it will leave small tissue pulp residue that will make a mess on your dogs face. You will need to work twice because you have to clean the shredded paper towels off your dogs face.
  • If you’re using wet wipes or tissues, do so only if you are sure that the materials are safe for your dog. How do you make sure of that? The answer is simple – only use specially made canine wet wipes. It is specifically made for your pooch, you can trust them. There are wipes for the ear, eyes, and even teeth.
  • Be gentle. Dont stroke your doggys face too strongly; they will not like it and it will be hard for you the next time you want to clean them. If the clump is too hard for you to clean, use more water to soften it. You can also use warm and wet soft cotton balls.
  • Often, facial grooming with only water is good to go. If you want to use a liquid cleaner, use a pet shampoo because dogs’ hair is different from humans.

Should I Clean My Dog’s Eye Boogers?

Clean Your Dog’s Face Properly

Yes, you should. You can use a wet washcloth or sponge. Clean the eye area gently to remove the booger. Dont wipe the eye directly as it can irritate the surface. Be gentle and do it slowly so your dog wont get startled. You can also use moistened soft cotton balls. Don’t use shampoo because it might get into your dogs eyes and hurt it.

You might also notice the brown stains that build up under the eyes. Its tears stains. If you have lightcolored dogs, its obvious to see. You should clean them every time you bathe your dog, but if the tear stains and eye boogie are excessive in your dogs eye, there might be a problem.

An eye infection or infected tear ducts might happen and you might want to bring your dog to the vet if you think there is something wrong with their eyes. There are also special stain removers available on the market if you want to remove them properly.

Training Your Dog To Enjoy Baths

Help Your Dog Learn to Love Baths

The most important thing is to get your dog accustomed to baths by reinforcing the idea of a bath with positive experiences. Positive experiences could mean their favorite treat or by giving them their favorite toy to play with.

Training your dog well will ensure that bathtime is easy and convenient for you and your dog. Some other tips include:

  1.  Petting or stroking your dog more often to get them used to being touched. Praise and reward them every time you do this to make sure they behave.
  2.  Get them used to taking a bath slowly as rushing them may backfire, causing your dog to freak.
  3.  Introduce your dog to the equipment such as the dog shampoo, the bathtub, and the hose.
  4.  If your dog is the active sort, you could consider taking your dog out for a long walk first. This tires them out so they will behave in the bath.

Are Human Shampoos Acceptable?

No! Humans and dogs have different pH levels on their skins and this results in human shampoos being possibly harmful to dogs.

Humans have more acidic skin with pH levels of 5 while dogs have neutral levels of 6-7. Human shampoos are calibrated to the human skin, making them more acidic.

This higher level of acidity is incompatible with the skin of the dogs and will result in your dog being more susceptible to parasites, bacteria, and skin diseases. Hence, it is always advised to use dog shampoo on your dogs when bathing.

Why Should I Use Dog Shampoo?

Just like humans, dogs have to be clean as well and the use of dog shampoos on them is hence totally necessary. Dog shampoos kill bacteria and germs that live on your dog’s body and leaves them smelling nice, therefore preventing any foul odours from developing.

Furthermore, dog shampoos are usually packed with vitamins and other formulas that are responsible for keeping the skin and coat of your dog healthy and clean. That is why you should choose the dog shampoo you use based on your dog’s needs.

What Is the Best Dog Shampoo?

Personally, as a dog owner myself, I find that my Cardinal Gold Medal dog shampoo offers the highest quality I can get for my dog. I recommend Cardinal Gold Medal dog shampoo as they offer up a large range and variety of dog shampoos and conditioners that are of the highest quality.

Cardinal Gold Medal Dog Shampoo

Each dog shampoo has its own function. For instance, the oatmeal dog shampoo relieves flea bites as well as dry and itchy skin.

The flea and tick shampoo acts as an insecticidal aid that prevents fleas and ticks from breeding on your dog, while simultaneously maintaining the coat’s shine and luster.

Also, there is a form of puppy shampoo which is more gentle and mild which is packed with vitamins. This puppy shampoo also works to keep the coat clean and soft.

What About Other Dog Shampoos Like Earth Bath, Silky, Skin Peace, and Yu Dog Shampoo?

Here are the others that you can consider.

I have heard from other dog owners of good comments for other dog shampoos such as Earthbath dog shampoo, silky dog, Yu, Skin Peace, Prunus and WildWash, Reliq, Forbis, Halo, Biogance, Malaseb, and Isle of Dog.

Unfortunately, I only used Silky, Cardinal Gold medals, Earthbath, Skin Peace, and Yu dog shampoo so the others I am unable to comment on. I feel all these brands I have used are quite gentle on the skin. If you are starting a new brand, do buy a small bottle and only get the large bottle when your dog has no allergic reaction and is happy with the shampoo.

Do Dogs Need Conditioner?

Yes, they do. Usingconditioner can make your dogs coat shinier and healthier. Conditioner makes your dogs hair smoother, and it will be easier for you to brush their coat afterward. A conditioner also restores the hydration, moisture, and elasticity of your dogs hair.

So if you can, you should definitely give conditioner to your dog at bath time. A longcoated dog is more likely to have tangled and matted fur.

I had a male Maltese when I was growing up and our family decided to keep his hair short to avoid tangles. You all know how pretty it is for a Maltese or longcoated dogs, like a Yorkshire or Shih Tzu to keep their hair long, right?

Well, to avoid cutting them short, use conditioner so you can easily brush your dogs coat without them getting tangled. Dogs with undercoats like the Shiba Inu or Siberian Husky are more recommended to use a conditioner because they have thicker and coarser hair that gets dirty easily.

Bathing also cleans out the natural oil released by our dogs skin. A bottle of conditioner will come in handy to keep them moisturised.

Do Dogs Feel Good After a Bath?

Yes, they do. Dogs often act crazy after a bath. They jump, they roll over your sofa or blanket, and some even run over to every corner of your house.

They act like this as an act of relief after bath anxiety, drying off their own hair, happiness (especially for young dogs, everything is just super fun for them and they cant contain their excitement), and their instinct to return to their own familiar scent before they are bathed in the scent that we like.

Happy grooming! Their happiness and health mean everything for us, and by taking care of their skin and hair, we are giving them the healthy life they deserve.
